Hi donnacha,

That's pretty good news about AtD! For AEC: Dutch is already included in 3.4+ (but not by me though)

@iPhoneclub

Actually, other languages are very much in the timeline!

As of yesterday, February 15th, AtD now recognizes and corrects French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, which covers about 1000,000,000 of the people on this planet!

Raphael Mudge, the lead AtD developer, says that they already have other languages ready to roll:

Proofread More Languages + Good-bye API Keys

... and it makes sense that Automattic are enthusiastic about adding more because WordPress.com, into which AtD is being integrated, already supports 132 languages!

I would guess that Dutch is a pretty high priority, given that it is a Western country with a high level of Internet access and many website owners.

If you are a native Dutch speaker, one thing you could do to make AEC better for your site's users and, indeed, all other Dutch users of AEC, would be to help Ronald create a Dutch translation of AEC - basically helping him to find Dutch equivalents for the words and phrases that AEC uses for its buttons and explanatory text.

At the moment, AEC caters to 16 languages but Dutch is not one of them and he has requested translation help:

In Need of an RTL Translator

It would be a cool thing to do but Ronald is also offering a lifetime membership of AEC, worth $200, as a way to say thanks to translators.

Thanks, much appreciated! I'd really love to see AtD expand to other languages, but that's currently not in the timeline (and off-topic for this discussion anyway )

@iphoneclub,

What I'll likely do is check the LANG constant. If it's blank or English, I'll show the ATD option. There will also be an admin panel option to disable it completely.

If possible, please make this an optional feature. I understand where donnacha is coming from, but since AtD is currently solely geared towards English speakers, we have no need for this integration (our blog posts and articles are in Dutch). Integrating AtD would hinder our commenters severely.

@Ronald

Yes, because:

1. We site owners have no control over what browser our visitors use.

2. We have no control over what plugins they install.

3. AEC, by making it easy for commenters to edit their comments, already improves the overall quality of comment threads. AtD would further enable and encourage users to better express themselves - the vast majority of people will not care enough about their grammar to install a plugin but, if the option is easily available while actually writing, they may care enough to press a button.

Again, this would be a nice feature that, thanks to the API and examples provided, should be relatively easy to integrate. All the processing is carried out by a server at Automattic.

One thing that the FF plugin does achieve is that it increases the awareness of AtD. That, in turn, increases the usefulness of AtD to AEC users because, of course, an increasing number of people will immediately understand what the button is for.

BTW, thank you for all your hard work on AEC, keep it up!

Do you think after the deadline integration is necessary now that there is a firefox extension for it?

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll take a look at this and possibly add this to a future version. Possibly a 3.5 or a 4.0

I would love to see Automattic's superb After the Deadline service integrated into AEC.

After the Deadline helps users to improve their comments by offering contextual spell checking, advanced style checking and intelligent grammar checking.

AEC already improves the general quality of comments by giving users an easy way to edit any mistakes they spot after posting; After the Deadline would be a natural fit, providing a quick and easy way for users to improve their writing before posting. the user press the small spell-check button and the service highlights the different types of mistake in different colors, providing suggested corrections when you click on each. The service runs entirely on Automattic's servers.

The developer, Raphael Mudge, encourages developers to add AtD to their applications by providing libraries for CKEditor, jQuery API, Python Library and the TinyMCE Plugin. The AtD Core UI module allows it to be ported to other systems. Raphael has written a guide called "Add After the Deadline to Your Application".

I believe that the addition of After the Deadline would fit well within AEC's existing features and would represent a substantial boost in functionality.
