No. We decided early on not to cripple the plugin. We felt this would result in a better user experience.
The authentication key is only necessary if you wish to be notified of upgrades in the admin panel. It also allows for automatic upgrades.
You can find your authentication key and affiliate ID in your member's section.
From there, head to the Ajax Edit Comments settings page and enter in your key and ID.

No need to worry. Advertising is off by default. You must turn it on, which is a few options down from the place to enter your affiliate ID. An alternate method of advertising is using one of our affiliate buttons.
The free trial is no longer offered due to various downloads that we wanted exclusive to paying members only. Also, many users were confused that they weren't being charged up front and would cancel the transaction. Discontinuing the free trial removed this confusion. If a user referred by you purchases a subscription, your balance will be updated after the 7-day free-trial expires.
